Eye infection care in St. Clair Shores, MI

Eye infections occur when bacteria, viruses, fungi, or other microorganisms infect the surface or structures of the eye. The most common type is conjunctivitis, often called “pink eye,” which affects the thin membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inner eyelids. Eye infections can cause redness, irritation, discharge, tearing, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or a feeling that something is in the eye. Some infections are highly contagious, particularly viral and bacterial conjunctivitis.

Infections can affect different parts of the eye. The eyelids may become infected (such as with a stye), the conjunctiva may become inflamed (conjunctivitis), or the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye — may develop a more serious infection called keratitis. Contact lens wear, eye injuries, poor eyelid hygiene, and certain medical conditions can increase the risk of developing an infection.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Bacterial infections are often treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments, while viral infections typically improve with supportive care as the body clears the infection. Some conditions may require prescription medications or closer monitoring to prevent complications. If symptoms are severe, worsening, or affecting vision, prompt evaluation by an eye doctor is important to protect the health of the eye and ensure appropriate treatment.
